Words from Others

The art of donation

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to meet an artist from Tula, Mr. Elton Monroy Durán. At first sight he seemed like a very normal person.  I mean, most artists have a complicated personality because they often have a different perception of the everyday aspects of life. But as the conversation was flowing, he exposed to me a completely distinct vision. He showed me his work and as he explained the origin and meaning of each one of his paintings, he was putting me in a place full of warmth and humanity.

I was very surprised, I will not deny it, because his work went beyond the beauty that art itself represents. It contained a very clear message: The importance of life through organ donation. Studying his paintings touched my heart and made me think about this topic and I realized that until this day, I have not met one person who has set their mind to donate their organs when they die, including myself.

In the real world, the topic of death, causes a lot of noise.  We don´t like the subject and we don´t want to hear about it.  We do not want to talk about it to our family, because most of the time, death is perceived as wrong, as a kind of punishment for both, those who leave and those who stay. Then, address the issue of what we want to do with the body at time of death, if it´s cremate, bury or donate.  It is a conversation that is also avoided. Rarely donation is considered because it might have created the idea that a mutilated body won´t be the same as it would be otherwise.

The truth is that what is beyond is not the body but the soul.  The body decomposes, integrates with the land and perhaps other living organisms or plants, but when the body no longer includes some organs, it does not mean the person is missing or that the soul can´t leave and arrive to another world, the spiritual one.

Speaking specifically of our country, there are barriers that prevent organ donation from becoming more popular. Factors such as culture, religion and society itself, make the decision difficult. However it is important to consider the fact that organ donation means that other individuals may have a better quality of life and can enjoy what this world offers.

Transplantation is a huge opportunity for people with chronic degenerative disease caused by organ failure.  In most cases this is the only option they have to preserve life. The list of patients waiting for an organ are endless.  They and their families often go through a nightmare including many tears and suffering just hoping that the organ arrives on time.

That's why I consider it very important to think carefully about this option, to think that a part of our body can give life and health to another human being. It is certainly an act of generosity and goodwill. If the decision is taken, it must be reported to the competent authorities along with any questions to make them confident that the process is carried out as stipulated. It is also extremely important to inform family and closest loved ones about it because at the end of the day they will make it possible for youYou can even leave it in writing, in a notarized letter. There is also the "volunteer donor card" which is awarded by the National Transplant Center to identify themselves as such.

At the end of the day, organ donation is a decision only you can make.  You have the right to do so or not to do so, but I think it is worth investigating the issue before get stuck in any possibility.

I personally admire the donation of works of art as just beautiful.  The mixture of colors, legends included by the artist, the stories of each one and the main reason that led him to create this collection were factors that made me realize that beyond what each of us understands by "death" there is a chance to see it as life. As Durán says, the donation of organs is important because "the existence of a being summarized all the arguments, life is wonderful and life with awareness of it can make us loving people. The important thing is not that is important to me, it is important that between us we are important. "
